Why Are My Teeth Yellow?

Your teeth could have intrinsic stains or extrinsic stains.

Intrinsic stains

Intrinsic stains can look white, chalky, brown or grey-black. They are stains that are embedded into the teeth while they are developing or while those teeth have erupted.

Aging also causes intrinsic staining as layers of enamel are lost over time, and the darker portions of teeth get exposed.

Extrinsic stains

Your choice of food, diet and habits plays a big part in extrinsic staining of teeth and they are the most common reason for teeth yellowing in adulthood. Major contributors of lifestyle habits include drinking coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking.

Extrinsic staining refers to stains that embed themselves on your teeth’s exterior or penetrate your tooth’s enamel.

Most of this staining is caused by the interaction of pigments from food and beverages with the plaque covering the enamel surface.

When stains penetrate the microscopic cracks and fissures of the teeth, they cannot be easily removed by consumer-grade whitening agents or brushing.

We offer a comprehensive and tailored approach that is safer, more effective, and longer-lasting results compared to over-the-counter methods.

Customised Treatment

Our dentists can provide home-based whitening treatments that utilise custom-fabricated dental trays to deliver the whitening agent.

This ensures a better fit and more effective coverage of the teeth, hence it’s more efficient in helping you whiten your teeth.

Our dentists can discuss your personalised treatment, set realistic goals, and make you aware of the process including what to watch out for. We will also answer any questions that you have.

Prescription-grade Whitening Agents

In-office procedures often use higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (25%-45%).

This can produce faster and more dramatic results compared to over-the-counter products.

In contrast, over-the-counter whitening agents used in unregulated kits have a maximum concentration of 0.1%.

The low concentration avoids any severe problems that come from user error, but this is far too low for any meaningful effect.

Since dentists like us have specialised tools, therefore, you can get whiter teeth in less time.

Professional Cleaning Before Whitening

To maximise effectiveness of our cleaning treatments, we can help you clean your teeth and remove any plaque to ensure that the teeth whitening treatments are working directly on your teeth

Our Teeth Whitening Methods

Sometimes, brushing is not enough!

We recommend two types of teeth whitening methods.

In-Office Chairside Whitening

Whitening your teeth can make you look and feel more confident. It’s an easy process that just takes one visit to our dental clinic, where we will apply trays of gel firmly onto the teeth surface over the next hour until they look several shades lighter and brighter.

Take-home Kits

For patients who are looking for take-home kits, we offer an alternative effective maintenance program that will keep the colour of your teeth white.

In-clinic treatments provide faster and potentially more dramatic results.

Fast results

You will see immediate results on the same day as your treatment. In about an hour, you’ll notice your teeth whiten significantly.

Professional protection

Our dentists will take utmost care to protect your gums from whitening agents by using dental dams or protective gels.

Tackles deeper staining and yellowing

Chairside whitening remains the only option if your teeth are significantly stained beyond what a take-home, prescription-grade kit can help.

take home whitening kit

You might prefer a take-home kit because

  • you don’t need immediate results;
  • prefer the flexibility;
  • your take-home kit can be used multiple times in the future.

Flexibility

Patients can continue to whiten their teeth until they reach their desired shade.

Moreover, after the initial treatment, you will still have the trays and access to the whitening material, allowing them to touch up their smile as often as they like.

Lower Costs

The cost of a take-home kit is lower than an in-clinic teeth whitening experience.

Custom Trays

These trays are custom-fabricated to fit your teeth perfectly so that the teeth whitening agents make contact with your teeth and ensure effective teeth whitening.

Teeth Whitening Timelines

Come to Gentle Smile Dental Studio for a consultation prior to your treatment for a safe, effective teeth whitening experience.

No matter which teeth whitening option you choose, we’ll meet two weeks after the treatment for a review.

In-Office Chairside Whitening

Firstly, we’ll have a 30 mins consultation.

Then, you choose between the Express and Premium package.

Express package: 45 mins consisting of two whitening cycles

Premium package: 1 hour consisting of three whitening cycles

Each cycle will consist of these steps:

  1. We’ll polish your teeth
  2. We’ll use a retractor and barrier to keep lips and gums away.
  3. We’ll apply the whitening gel
  4. We’ll shine teeth whitening light

After each cycle, we will replace the whitening gel and shine the light again for the next cycle.

Take-Home Kits

If you prefer a take-home teeth whitening kit, we will then use the digital scan from the consultation to fabricate whitening trays which means no need for mould/dental impression.

Trays will take 10 days to 2 weeks to be ready.

Our Gentle Smile team will test the trays to ensure fit and to teach you how to apply the gel and give instructions for usage.

Take-home teeth whitening kits are used for 1-2 hours each day for two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of teeth whitening treatment?

The cost of treatment ranges from $350 to $950.

How quickly can teeth whitening be done?

For take-home teeth whitening, it will take about two weeks. For chairside teeth whitening, your results will be seen on the same day. There is also a two-week follow up for all teeth whitening treatments.

What is the difference between in-clinic chairside teeth whitening and take-home teeth whitening kits?

Both methods are effective in helping you whiten your teeth as they both use prescription-grade teeth whitening agents under the supervision of our dentists. The main difference between chairside teeth whitening and take-home kits is the time needed to see results, prices and your involvement in the process.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Teeth whitening results can vary depending on several factors, including the method used and your individual habits. Generally speaking, professional teeth whitening performed in a dental office can last anywhere from six months to three years.
Here are some key factors that influence the longevity of your teeth whitening results:

Lifestyle Habits: Consumption of staining foods and drinks (like coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco) can shorten the duration of your whitening results. Reducing or avoiding these can help maintain your bright smile longer.

Oral Hygiene: Consistent and thorough brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups play a vital role in prolonging whitening results.

Whitening Method: In-office whitening treatments tend to last longer than over-the-counter products. Take-home kits provided by your dentist can also offer long-lasting results if used as directed.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening is generally considered safe when performed under the supervision of a dental professional. Here’s what you need to know:

Professional Supervision: Teeth whitening conducted in a dental office or with a dentist-prescribed take-home kit is typically safe. Dentists use approved whitening agents and ensure they are applied correctly to minimize any risk of harm to your teeth and gums.

Potential Sensitivity: Some people may experience temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation following whitening treatments. This usually subsides within a few days after the procedure. Your dentist can provide products to alleviate this sensitivity if it occurs.

Over-the-Counter Products: While many over-the-counter whitening products are safe, it is important to follow the instructions carefully. Overuse or improper application can lead to gum irritation or enamel damage.
Pre-existing Dental Conditions: If you have dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, or worn enamel, it’s best to address these with your dentist before undergoing teeth whitening.

What to avoid after teeth whitening?

After undergoing a teeth whitening procedure, there are several things you should avoid to help maintain your bright smile and ensure the best results. Here’s what you should keep in mind:

Staining Foods and Drinks:
Avoid eating foods and beverages that can stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, cola, and dark-colored fruits like berries.
If you do eat these, try using a straw to minimize contact with your teeth and rinse your mouth with water afterward.

Tobacco Products:
Smoking or chewing tobacco can quickly re-stain your teeth. It’s best to avoid these products to maintain your whitening results and for overall oral health.

Highly Acidic Foods:
Foods high in acid, like citrus fruits (eg. oranges and lemons) and vinegar-based dressings, can weaken enamel and increase sensitivity. It’s best to limit these immediately after whitening.

Colored Oral Hygiene Products:
Avoid using colored mouthwashes or toothpaste, which may contain dyes that could stain your teeth. Opt for clear or white versions instead.

Hot or Cold Beverages:
Your teeth might be temporarily sensitive after whitening. Avoid extremely hot or cold drinks to prevent discomfort.

Dark Sauces:
Steer clear of sauces like soy sauce, tomato sauce, and curry, which can contribute to staining. Instead, opt for lighter-colored options or be sure to brush soon after consumption.

How long after teeth whitening can i eat normally?

After a teeth whitening procedure, it’s typically advised to wait about 24 to 48 hours before returning to your normal eating habits. This allows the pores of your teeth, which temporarily open during the whitening process, to close and helps prevent staining. Here are some detailed guidelines for post-whitening care:

First 24 to 48 Hours:
Stick to a “White Diet”: During this period, it’s best to consume light-colored foods and beverages to avoid any potential staining. Some safe options include:
White rice, chicken, turkey
Potatoes, cauliflower, white onions
Bananas, pears, and apples (peeled)
Water, milk, coconut water

Foods and Drinks to Avoid:
Staining Drinks: Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, soda, and any dark-colored beverages.
Staining Foods: Steer clear of dark sauces (soy sauce, tomato sauce), colorful vegetables (like beets, carrots), and berries.
Acidic Foods: Avoid acidic foods like citrus fruits and vinegar-based dressings, as they can increase sensitivity.

After 48 Hours:
Gradual Reintroduction: You can begin to reintroduce your regular diet, but continue to be mindful of foods and drinks that can cause staining.
Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly to keep your teeth clean and minimize staining.
