Why are dental x-rays a crucial step in any treatment process?
Besides getting a physical examination, dental X-rays facilitate dentists to get an in-depth understanding of your teeth’s condition at a structural level. By providing a visual projection of underlying teeth and gum problems, dentists can provide suitable solutions before problems worsen or require more extensive treatment.
What type of issues do dental X-rays often uncover?
Dental x-rays often detect issues that aren’t always visible to the naked eye such as signs of bone loss around the teeth and gums, early detection of tooth decay or cavities, gum disease, and the possibility of impacted teeth, among others.
What does the dental X-ray process involve?
Step 1: Prior to a dental X-ray, patients will have to remove any metal objects on them such as chains, jewellery, keys, and so on.
Step 2: Next, patients will be requested to put on a dental vest before the x-ray, which is a heavily padded garment that covers the upper chest, arms, and back to protect them from radiation exposure.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Our digital X-ray machines emit very low amounts of radiation. Regular maintenance and routine checks are done to ensure the machines operate in a safe environment.
What happens after a dental X-ray?
After a dental X-ray, our dentists will devise the best treatment plan for your condition before it becomes more serious so that you can have healthy teeth and gums again.

Tooth extraction is usually the last resort after all other alternatives have been considered to save the tooth. Our dentists will first assess the affected tooth to determine whether any part of its structure can be salvaged or preserved through alternative treatments such as root canals, crown applications, or dental implants.
In case other treatments prove to be ineffective, the tooth needs to be extracted to prevent any prevailing decay from spreading to other teeth. If you have chronic gum disease, deep cracks in your tooth structure, or tooth decay that has descended to the root, there is no other alternative except extraction.
Besides irreparable tooth decay, extraction is also a necessary step in the process of attaching dental braces to create some room to realign the teeth uniformly.
Cost To Pull A Tooth
Depending on how complicated your procedure is, the cost to pull frontal teeth all the way to the back molars starts at $250-$350 for simple extractions. However, teeth that need surgical removal will cost $950-$1,250. We’ll explain the difference below.
Simple Extraction
$250-$350
A dental procedure where your tooth is removed non-surgically.
Typically used for teeth that have fully erupted into the mouth and are accessible.
The process involves loosening and pulling out the tooth with dental instruments, often under local anesthesia.
Surgical Removal
$950-$1250
This involves surgically extracting a tooth that hasn’t fully emerged or is impacted within the jawbone.
The procedure may require incisions in the gums and removal of bone.
It’s more complex than a simple extraction, often requiring general anesthesia or sedation.
Should you be entitled to Medisave claims, you can claim up to S$1,250 for surgical procedures via Medisave.
In order to keep your smile from missing a few gaps, the natural step post-extraction would be the consideration of placing implants or dentures to fill the empty space of the extracted tooth or teeth.
You must take care of the area where the tooth was extracted so avoid foods that are hard and foods that are sticky, such as nuts, nougat, jerky or sweets. Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking. Avoid hot or cold drinks because you might experience sensitivity.
How does a tooth extraction heal?
Healing typically occurs in stages: initial healing, where the gum tissue closes over the extraction site, takes about one to two weeks. Deeper bone healing can take several weeks to months.

Wisdom teeth are the rearmost molars that emerge during the late teen years to the early 20s. Although not everyone gets them, those who do can have up to four wisdom teeth, each seated in the furthest corners of the upper and lower jaws.
What Problems Can Wisdom Teeth Create?
Wisdom teeth are the final adult teeth to grow, often after each of your permanent teeth has found its place and formed a collective structure.
The late emergence of wisdom teeth poses problems because of the lack of space in the mouth such as compacted or crowded teeth, swelling caused by the wisdom teeth getting trapped beneath the gum layer, impact with the jawbone and neighbouring teeth, and crooked or angular growth of the wisdom teeth themselves.
These can cause toothaches, a sense of jawline pressure or sensitivity, pinched nerves, and inflamed gums. The first signs of wisdom teeth issues are often experienced through a sharp pain at the hinges of the jaw, difficulty chewing as the adjacent row of teeth bear down on the wisdom teeth, and tooth pain indicative of decay caused by trapped food particles among other dental issues.
What Can Be Done Before Considering Wisdom Tooth Removal?
To ease the discomfort and contain the impact of the affected wisdom tooth, our dentists will cleanse and apply a local anaesthetic gel, prescribe painkillers and antibiotics (if needed to reduce any swelling prior to the surgery), and then trim any gum tissue that’s obstructing your wisdom tooth from growing out.
When Do Wisdom Teeth Have To Be Removed?
If the decay or impact threatens the dental health, alignment, and comfort of the your daily lifestyle, it’s in your best interest to remove the affected wisdom teeth. An X-ray will be taken to get a clearer picture of the location and impact of your wisdom tooth before removal.
What Happens During The Procedure For Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Before the operation, a local anaesthetic will be administered to protect the patient from any pain during the procedure. Most usually the overlapping gums and bone around the tooth can be pushed aside followed by dividing the wisdom tooth and removing them in parts. The whole procedure usually takes about an hour depending on the complexity of the case.
Wisdom Teeth Care After Surgery
You will be prescribed painkillers after the anaesthesia wears off and will need to complete a timely course of antibiotics for around 5 days to a week.
There may also be a little bit of bleeding from the operated wound, which can be absorbed by biting down on some clean gauze and throwing it away.
Gently brush the other teeth and rinse the mouth to keep any food from settling on the wound or causing it to bleed. Do try to minimise the amount of physical activity until the wound heals.
The patient may have a swollen cheek which can be eased with a cold pack while experiencing any stiffness or difficulty in opening and closing the jaw is normal. Stick to a diet of soft and soluble foods that requires less chewing, and avoid spicy food, smoking, and alcohol so it doesn’t sting or infect the raw wound.
After around a week, we will invite you for a follow-up appointment with our dentist to assess the state of the teeth and remove any stitching.

Also called endodontic treatment, a root canal procedure involves taking out the infected or affected pulp of the concerned tooth followed by a gentle yet detailed cleaning of the cavity, putting in a filling, and if needed, placing a dental crown to protect the tooth.
When is a root canal procedure necessary?
Root canals should be done ASAP to avoid infections causing loss of the whole tooth.
You’ll need a root canal when tooth decay or cracks extend into the innermost structure of the tooth, known as the root canal.
Your tooth’s pulp can’t heal itself and therefore a root canal may be necessary.
Most of the time, when there is a root canal infection, you will experience pain or tooth sensitivity.
How Does Root Canal Treatment Improve Overall Dental Health?
Root canal treatment removes the infection from the tooth and allows the tooth to remain in the mouth for function and aesthetics.
If left untreated, it could further complicate the tooth’s condition, spread the decay, and leave the jaw bone vulnerable to disease. This procedure also allows patients to bypass the last resort option of extracting the entire tooth.
What Does A Root Canal Process Involve?
A root canal is usually a same-day procedure depending on where the tooth is located (back teeth may require additional sessions because of the difficulty in accessing them and complex nerve pathways and roots) or the degree of damage borne by the tooth.
Step 1: X-Rays
Our dentists will start by taking several X-rays of your teeth and the infected tooth to evaluate the depth, structure, and intricacy of the root canals.
Step 2: Anaesthesia
Anaesthetic reduces pain and discomfort to a minimum and is an essential step.
After applying topical and local anaesthesia, the dentist will gently access the root canal of the affected tooth.
Step 3: Cleaning
Cleaning the root canals thoroughly to get rid of bacteria inside the root canal.
*Note: A tooth that has undergone a root canal procedure may be fragile compared to the other teeth but maintaining a rigorous dental hygiene routine (brushing, flossing, teeth-friendly diet and regular dental checks) can prolong its durability.
Cost of Root Canal And Crown
Root canals range between $850 to $1450 depending on which tooth you need worked on and how complex your situation is.
Generally, molars (teeth at the back) are more difficult to treat, and have the most number of roots, so they generally take more time to work on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are root canal treatments painful?
At Gentle Smile Dental Studio, we focus on doing every surgery gently. Before we start the root canal, we will numb the tooth where we’re going to work on. Once numb, you should experience minimal discomfort and pain throughout the procedure.
How is root canal done?
There are four main steps: 1) X-Ray; 2) Anaesthesia; 3) Clean and 4) Fill. These four steps can be completed on the same day.
Is there a situation when root canals cannot be done?
Some scenarios include severe infection that prevents a root canal from being effective. Another scenario involves having too little tooth to build a crown upon. In these cases, you might have to go for an extraction and/or implant.
Will root canal stop tooth sensitivity?
If you have sensitivity when biting or reacting to hot or cold foods, then you might have infected pulp that’s causing these issues. Book an appointment with us.
What is the cost of a root canal?
A root canal costs between $850 to $1,450 depending on complexity.

When tooth decay happens, a dental filling may be needed to repair the tooth from the damage of the tooth decay.
Our dentists will start by conducting a preliminary examination of the affected teeth to assess whether they can be salvaged and the best course of action based on the patient’s needs and expectations.
What are dental fillings for?
Dental fillings are applied to preserve a tooth’s health by halting the decay caused by a cavity and patching up the hole caused by the tooth decay.
What type of dental fillings are often used?
Tooth filling materials include metal amalgams (consisting of mercury) and composite resin.
Today, most dentists would choose dental fillings without mercury in them.
Amalgam fillings
Gentle Smile Dental Studio is a mercury-free practice.
Dental amalgam has been used to restore decayed teeth since 1830.
Dental amalgam is a mixture of metals, consisting of about 50% mercury. Mercury vapour is released upon removal of amalgam filling.
The most common used direct filling material at Gentle Smile Dental Studio. The technology used in composite resin allows it to be bonded/adhered to the tooth. With proper oral maintenance, composite resin restorations can last more than a decade.
Composite resin is tooth coloured, offering an aesthetic pleasing option for tooth restoration.
At Gentle Smile Dental Studio, we follow a strict application protocol when we are placing composite resin restoration to improve the lifespan of the restoration.
Indirect Ceramic Fillings
Indirect ceramic filling is a dental procedure used for moderate-sized cavities. It’s more extensive than a regular filling but less extensive than a full crown, serving as a middle-ground restoration option.
Indirect fillings are custom-made in a dental lab and then bonded to the tooth. There are two methods.
Inlays
Inlays are dental restorations that fit inside the grooves of your tooth.
They’re used when you have cavities located in the centre of your tooth and the damage isn’t too severe.
It’s a way to repair and strengthen the tooth without the need for a full crown.
Onlays
In contrast, onlays are dental restorations that cover one or more raised points on your tooth called cusps.
It’s like adding a protective cap to the tooth to make it strong again.
They’re used when the damage to your tooth is quite extensive, and it needs to be restored over a large portion of the chewing surface.
Tooth filling cost
At Gentle Smile Dental Studio, filling a cavity or tooth fillings starts from around $200 and can vary depending on several factors. These factors include the type of material used and the complexity of the filling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are dental fillings painful?
Depending on the depth of the filling, dental fillings can cause discomfort, but pain can be minimized with local anesthesia.
Are dental fillings safe?
Yes, dental fillings are generally safe. They are widely used to repair cavities and restore tooth function. If you have a mercury filling that needs work, we follow the internationally-recognised Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique.
What are dental fillings made of?
We only use dental composites when filling cavities. However, dentists have long used metal amalgam (consisting of 50% mercury), which is the other alternative dental filling material.
When do dental fillings need to be replaced?
Dental fillings typically need replacement when they show signs of wear, cracking, or leakage, or if new decay develops around them. Regular dental check-ups can help determine if a filling needs replacement. The lifespan of a filling varies, often lasting many years.
What do dental fillings cost in Singapore?
Dental fillings at our clinic start at $200 depending on various factors such as complexity and how much filling is needed.

A beautiful smile begins with having a good set of teeth.
During your dental check up, the dentist will do a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. Any areas that need special attention will be noted and addressed during the treatment.
How often do I need teeth cleaning?
Once every six months.
Unless you brush perfectly every day, plaque and tartar will build up over time. Every six months, you will need to remove tartar and plaque from your teeth before they cause problems down the road.
If the teeth are not properly cleaned and maintained, it will result in the following problems:
Here’s what you can expect from a routine dental cleaning service, which involves the two-part process of scaling and polishing plus application of flouride.
Teeth Scaling and Polishing
Scaling and polishing ranges from simple to complex, and the treatment process is usually gentle and painless.
Scaling and Polishing is important to minimise the risk of developing further tooth decay that will pose a problem for your general oral health. If required, you will need to visit the dentist for regular cleaning sessions and additional treatments to get your teeth and gums healthy again.
In the process, we will use an airflow prophy jet which will help with removing any stubborn stains that may have built up over time.
Simple Scaling
For the simple version, your teeth will be professionally cleaned using special equipment and pastes that gently glide over your enamel, removing all the plaque and tartar built-up in the areas that are hard to reach using a toothbrush.
Complex Scaling
For complex scaling and polishing, besides more time being spent to remove the plaque and/or tartar build up on all your teeth – any additional risk factors will be highlighted and addressed during the treatment plan.
Flouride Application
Finally, we will apply a layer of fluoride onto your teeth.
Fluoride protects against cavities, remineralises your tooth enamel and prevents early tooth decay.
The application of fluoride will only take a few minutes and you are done!
Final Step
Finally, your dentist will use a teeth model to demonstrate how to care for and maintain good oral hygiene at home. This includes the right technique to brush and floss, making both a regular habit, so that your teeth remain free from plaque in the future.
Dental Cleaning Cost
The cost of a dental cleaning includes a dental check-up and then the deep cleaning of your teeth. Here are the prices.
Most people find dental cleaning to be a very relaxing experience. You recline in a comfortable chair with protective eye wear as the scaling and polishing begins.
For any specific hygiene needs, it is recommended that you come in for regular oral hygiene appointments to ensure your mouth stays clean and healthy.

Dental veneers are coverings made from high-quality dental materials like tooth-coloured composite or porcelain, designed to fit over the front surfaces of teeth.
Singaporeans who need a way to solve imperfections in their teeth can look towards dental veneers as a way to enhance their appearance.
What cosmetic issues can veneers solve?
The three aspects of a beautiful smile are colour, alignment and shape. Veneers play an integral part in enhancing these qualities of your smile.
Colour
Improving colour of your teeth generally starts with teeth whitening, but some stains do not respond to treatment.
In this case, we can use a veneer to cover the stained tooth and ensure uniformity of colour among your teeth.
Creation of dental veneers takes two appointments.
We use the iTero 5D scanning technology to create scans of your mouth.
Prior to this technology, the only option was filling your mouth with a mushy clay-like mould to create an impression.
First appointment
At your first appointment, we will examine the state of your teeth and gums. Any cleaning or repairs that we need to do will be handled at this stage.
Then, we will prepare your teeth to receive your veneer. We will use our iTero 5D scanning tool to create a 3D representation of your teeth.
Using the scan, we’ll make an order for your customised veneers. If necessary, we will bond a set of temporary veneers.
Once you’re done with the appointment, you can resume regular activities. There is no disruption to your daily lifestyle.
Second appointment
At this appointment, you will receive the new smile you have been waiting for.
Your teeth will be cleaned and prepared for bonding of the veneers.
With your new set of veneers, you can enjoy eating and drinking right after the treatment.
Types of dental veneers
Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers are aesthetically pleasant and have the longest lifespan of 8-15 years.
Porcelain is more dynamic and we employ them in more complex restorations.
Porcelain veneers are also known as ceramic veneers.
Composite veneers
Dental-grade composite resins are used in these veneers.
Their advantage is that they are more affordable than porcelain veneers and we can use them in less complex cases.
If you are doing a smile makeover, which requires multiple units, composite veneers can make the procedure much more affordable.
Their lifespan is about half of porcelain veneers.
Removable veneers
This class of veneers are the cheapest option and require little to no preparation but are not recommended for long-term use and may not look as natural
What does it cost to get dental veneers in Singapore?
Dental veneers cost $700 -$2,000 individually, depending on the material used.
If you are looking to do a full-mouth makeover using porcelain veneers, they might require multiple units and cost between $6,000 to $20,000. You might be interested in a smile makeover.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to get veneers on all teeth?
Veneers can be applied to as few or as many teeth as needed for your desired aesthetic. You will generally need multiple veneers if you are seeking a smile makeover.
How much is it for dental veneers?
Per unit, about $700 – $2,000, depending on the material used for your veneer.
Do you still need to go to the dentist with veneers?
Dental veneers require daily hygiene maintenance and have a lifespan of up to 15 years for porcelain veneers.
Are dental veneers permanent?
Yes and no. Porcelain and composite veneers are fixed in place permanently, but do have a limited lifespan. Porcelain veneers last longer while composite veneers have a shorter lifespan.
How are dental veneers installed?
It takes two sessions. In the first session, we prep and scan teeth, and order your veneer. In the second session, we bond the veneers to your teeth.

Gentle Smile Dental Studio uses titanium or ceramic to make your dental implants, which is the preferred material among Singaporean dentists.
These are surgically embedded into your jawbone.
With the latest technology, our dentists can translate information from a 3D x-ray (CBCT) and an intra-oral scan of the mouth to create a stent/surgical guide to place the dental implant in the mouth in a more controlled and predictable manner.
The prosthesis is the top-most part and looks like a natural tooth.
In this case, it’s a single crown, but they can be a series of teeth (known as a bridge), or they can be dentures.
The prosthesis goes into the abutment.
Abutment
The abutment is the middle part that connects the top to the bottom.
It can be made of metal, ceramics or polymers.
Fixture
This is the implant that goes into your jawbone.
We Use Straumann Dental Implants
Proven, safe and durable Swiss implants.
Straumann has been making implants since 1974 and has a record of keeping patients safe.
In addition to titanium and ceramic implants, Straumann has the Roxolid material which is made of 15% zirconium and 85% titanium, which can have greater strength, preserves bone and allows for less invasive treatment plans. They also come with the Straumann Lifetime+ Guarantee.
The whole process normally requires 2 longer appointments (an hour) and 2 short visits which span over 3 months, depending on the complexity of the case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can dental implants be done in one day?
Dental implantations almost always require follow-ups. That said, specific methods can reduce the number of major appointments. However, not every patient is a candidate for same-day implants; it depends on individual factors such as bone density, oral health, and the specific conditions of the mouth and jaw.
Most people will leave with a temporary crown over the implant and the final, permanent crown is usually fitted after several months of healing. The permanent crown allows for more biting/loading.
What do dental implants look like?
They look like a tooth but usually with a titanium root. It is made of an implant (the titanium part integrated with the jawbone), an abutment (the connector between the implant and the crown), and the crown which looks like a natural tooth.
When are dental implants medically necessary?
Dental implants are medically necessary to restore function and prevent complications from tooth loss, like bone loss and bite misalignment.
When doing dental implants, can you be put to sleep?
Can dental implants fix crooked teeth or straighten teeth?
Dental implants are not a direct method for correcting crooked teeth but can help your aesthetics by replacing missing, broken, or chipped teeth.
What is the cost of dental implants in Singapore?
Here are estimates at our clinic, before GST. CBCT (3D X-Ray) – $350 Straumann Implant with crown: around $4,500 You can claim about $1,250 from Medisave for the surgical part.

Singaporeans can have square jaws that detract from their ideal look. The good news is that Gentle Smile Dental Studio can help you create pleasant contours on your face.
What makes an ideal jawline?
A square jaw generally refers to the lower jaw bone jutting out on the side.
Those who are born with a strong jawline, naturally have a shorter face length, and square chin and could require masseter reduction surgery.
While some individuals are confident of their strong facial structure, some individuals, especially women, with square jaw may dislike it, and can’t wait to get rid of the excess bone jutting out (the angle between the chin and the neck that causes noticeable facial discordance of the female face, which is associated with masculine facial appearance).
Asian men and women tend to have more square-shaped jaws
Diet and habits
Eating hard or chewy foods will cause jaw muscle growth
Overnight tendencies
You might be clenching or grinding at night, causing your jaw muscles to grow.
Square Jaw to V-Shape Treatment
Square jaw reduction reduces the width of the lower part of the face, especially if it is caused by the lower jaw bone and the surrounding masseter muscle.
The masseter muscle is a strong and thick rectangular-shaped muscle (performing the primary function of chewing) that wraps around the side of the lower jaw and causes a powerful elevation or contraction of the lower jaw.
BTX for square jaw reduction will be from $300-$500 (before GST) depending on the dosage required.
Repeated treatments may be required for non-surgical treatment as the results typically last 3-6 months. Our dentist will make a clinical assessment and customise the most appropriate procedure for you depending on your needs.
Square jaws are seen as a masculine trait and is seen as attractive on men. However, female beauty prefers a V-shaped jawline.
What causes a square jaw?
Genetics, what you eat and overnight teeth grinding and clenching can cause your jaw muscles to grow, causing a square jaw.
How to make square jaw less prominent?
Our dentists can advise the best surgical or non-surgical method based on your situation. Surgical methods include jaw surgery, while non-surgical methods include BTX, Invisalign and nightguards.
Can I reduce my square jaw without surgery?
Yes. It’s possible to use non-surgical methods such as BTX, Invisalign and nightguards.
How long does square jaw reduction take?
It varies depending on the course of action required. For example, BTX is a process that needs topping-up at specific intervals, while jaw surgery requires consultation and surgery.
How much does jaw surgery in Singapore cost?
Jaw surgery has to be quoted on a case-by-case basis.

Why Are My Teeth Yellow?
Your teeth could have intrinsic stains or extrinsic stains.
Intrinsic stains
Intrinsic stains can look white, chalky, brown or grey-black. They are stains that are embedded into the teeth while they are developing or while those teeth have erupted.
Aging also causes intrinsic staining as layers of enamel are lost over time, and the darker portions of teeth get exposed.
Extrinsic stains
Your choice of food, diet and habits plays a big part in extrinsic staining of teeth and they are the most common reason for teeth yellowing in adulthood. Major contributors of lifestyle habits include drinking coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking.
Extrinsic staining refers to stains that embed themselves on your teeth’s exterior or penetrate your tooth’s enamel.
Most of this staining is caused by the interaction of pigments from food and beverages with the plaque covering the enamel surface.
When stains penetrate the microscopic cracks and fissures of the teeth, they cannot be easily removed by consumer-grade whitening agents or brushing.
Why Do Teeth Whitening with Gentle Smile Dental Studio?
At Gentle Smile Dental Studio, we can help you whiten your teeth with specialised tools that are exclusive to dental professionals.
We offer a comprehensive and tailored approach that is safer, more effective, and longer-lasting results compared to over-the-counter methods.
Customised Treatment
Our dentists can provide home-based whitening treatments that utilise custom-fabricated dental trays to deliver the whitening agent.
This ensures a better fit and more effective coverage of the teeth, hence it’s more efficient in helping you whiten your teeth.
Our dentists can discuss your personalised treatment, set realistic goals, and make you aware of the process including what to watch out for. We will also answer any questions that you have.
Prescription-grade Whitening Agents
In-office procedures often use higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (25%-45%).
This can produce faster and more dramatic results compared to over-the-counter products.
In contrast, over-the-counter whitening agents used in unregulated kits have a maximum concentration of 0.1%.
The low concentration avoids any severe problems that come from user error, but this is far too low for any meaningful effect.
Since dentists like us have specialised tools, therefore, you can get whiter teeth in less time.
Professional Cleaning Before Whitening
To maximise effectiveness of our cleaning treatments, we can help you clean your teeth and remove any plaque to ensure that the teeth whitening treatments are working directly on your teeth
We recommend two types of teeth whitening methods.
In-Office Chairside Whitening
Whitening your teeth can make you look and feel more confident. It’s an easy process that just takes one visit to our dental clinic, where we will apply trays of gel firmly onto the teeth surface over the next hour until they look several shades lighter and brighter.
Take-home Kits
For patients who are looking for take-home kits, we offer an alternative effective maintenance program that will keep the colour of your teeth white.
Why chairside whitening?
In-clinic treatments provide faster and potentially more dramatic results.
Fast results
You will see immediate results on the same day as your treatment. In about an hour, you’ll notice your teeth whiten significantly.
Professional protection
Our dentists will take utmost care to protect your gums from whitening agents by using dental dams or protective gels.
Tackles deeper staining and yellowing
Chairside whitening remains the only option if your teeth are significantly stained beyond what a take-home, prescription-grade kit can help.
Why take-home teeth whitening kit?
You might prefer a take-home kit because
you don’t need immediate results;
prefer the flexibility;
your take-home kit can be used multiple times in the future.
Flexibility
Patients can continue to whiten their teeth until they reach their desired shade.
Moreover, after the initial treatment, you will still have the trays and access to the whitening material, allowing them to touch up their smile as often as they like.
Lower Costs
The cost of a take-home kit is lower than an in-clinic teeth whitening experience.
Custom Trays
These trays are custom-fabricated to fit your teeth perfectly so that the teeth whitening agents make contact with your teeth and ensure effective teeth whitening.
Teeth Whitening Timelines
Come to Gentle Smile Dental Studio for a consultation prior to your treatment for a safe, effective teeth whitening experience.
No matter which teeth whitening option you choose, we’ll meet two weeks after the treatment for a review.

We’ll apply the whitening gel
We’ll shine teeth whitening light
After each cycle, we will replace the whitening gel and shine the light again for the next cycle.
Take-Home Kits
If you prefer a take-home teeth whitening kit, we will then use the digital scan from the consultation to fabricate whitening trays which means no need for mould/dental impression.
Trays will take 10 days to 2 weeks to be ready.
Our Gentle Smile team will test the trays to ensure fit and to teach you how to apply the gel and give instructions for usage.
Take-home teeth whitening kits are used for 1-2 hours each day for two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cost of treatment?
The cost of treatment ranges from $350 to $950.

Our teeth are exposed to constant biting and chewing and occasional damage from dental decay. When there is too much damage to our natural teeth, there is the risk that they may fracture and removal of the tooth may be needed.
What Are Dental Crowns And Bridges?
To salvage a decayed, broken or loose tooth, a crown is a custom-made cap made of porcelain embedded onto the top of the tooth, based on the contours of a person’s teeth and bite.
In the event of one or more missing teeth, a dentist may recommend getting a dental bridge, which is made of a couple of interlinked crowns that are gently placed on top of the missing tooth and the healthy teeth next to it.
Why You Might Need A Dental Crown
The most common reason Singaporeans need dental crowns is due to dental cavities or fractures that compromise the tooth so much that simpler repairs won’t do.
Aesthetics can also be part of your consideration. Crowns can replace worn and discoloured teeth, helping you create an ideal smile with better shape, alignment and colour.
When it comes to restoring a broken or infected tooth, the dentist will proceed to polish the damaged portion before scanning the mould of the tooth with an intra oral scanner.
With technology, it is possible to have the crown done on the day itself, eliminating the need for a second visit and risk of temporary crown dislodging.
Same Day Crown?
Yes, it’s possible to get a crown on the same day here at Gentle Smile Dental Studio.
We have the technology to make ceramic/porcelain crowns with high durability and natural colour in one sitting.
Crowns and bridges are made of oral safe, strong, and long-lasting materials such as ceramic/porcelain or metal to naturally blend in and give you a seamless smile.
They also help retain the integrity of your original teeth and support your facial structure so you can eat and speak normally again.
While a crown procedure involves capping a single tooth, a dental bridge is created in support of the adjacent teeth.
During the first visit for a dental bridge, the dentist will examine the health of the affected tooth and the strength of the adjoining teeth. In case the health of the gums or supporting teeth is compromised, the dentist may suggest a root canal or other appropriate dental procedures so a bridge can be fixed effectively.
As done in the crown procedure, during the dental bridge application, a local anesthetic will be administered followed by shaving down the size and shape of the affected tooth and its neighbouring teeth. A plaster-based dental impression will then be taken to create a bridge to fit the shape and texture of the atrophied teeth.
A stopgap dental bridge will be attached to the area to protect the adjoining teeth until your custom-made bridge is ready.
On your next visit, the temporary bridge will be taken out while the dental bridge prepared for your teeth will be fastened on permanently.
Crowns and Bridges After-care
Besides mild discomfort and sensitivity, patients can usually begin using their teeth within a couple of hours after the procedure. However, it is best to avoid food and drinks that are too hot or cold for about a week after.
With proper dental care from brushing and flossing to regular dental health checkups, your crowns and bridges should last about a decade or more. It may take you around a couple of days to a week to adapt to your crown or bridge but you can feel free to flaunt your new smile confidently.
Timelines For Dental Crowns and Bridges
Same-Day Crown
Done within a few hours.
Costs about $2,500.
Traditional Crown
Two appointments, taking a few days to a few weeks
Dental crown placement causes minimal pain but some discomfort is common, especially from dental drilling. Post-procedure, patients might experience tenderness or soreness. Our dentists will advise the best way to manage these symptoms.
What is the difference between crown, veneer and partial crown?
Crowns cover entire tooth, restoring severely damaged teeth. Veneers adhere to front surface, primarily for cosmetic purposes. Partial crowns (inlays/onlays) cover part of chewing surface or one cusp, treating moderate decay.
How long does a dental crown last?
About 5-20 years
How long does it take to get a dental crown?
Same-day crowns: within a few hours Traditional crown: two appointments, a few days to weeks
How long does it take to get a dental bridge?
It takes about two weeks to get a dental bridge.
How much does it cost to get a dental crown?
Getting a traditional dental crown starts at $2,000 and same-day crowns start at $2,500.
How much does it cost to get a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is a more complex operation that depends on the number of teeth involved and the condition of the surrounding teeth and gums. The procedure starts at $5,500.
What is the difference between a crown and a bridge?
A dental bridge fills space caused by missing teeth, anchored by teeth or implants on either side, while a crown covers an existing tooth to restore its shape or structural integrity.

The ideal healthy gum colour is always thought to be pink and firm, not brown, red or swollen.
To keep your teeth and gums healthy is choosing to eat the right foods, including celery, carrots and apples and adding fruits into your healthy diet, as well as practising good oral hygiene and regular cleaning.
There’s no denying that maintaining a healthy diet is just as important as keeping your gums pink and healthy if you want to enjoy a beautiful smile.
However, what your gum colour is, can say a lot about your health. When your gums are in poor condition, it’s an indication that your health may be, too.
What leads to darker gums?
Patients who have darker gums are either genetic or commonly associated with heavy smoking, or showing signs of periodontal disease, or just that they may have a weaker immune system. Poor immune system is the result of bacterial growth.
At Gentle Smile Dental Studio, we offer gum whitening (gum depigmentation), which is a safe and effective method of destroying the cells that produce melanin, and leave behind pink new tissue in place for your gums.
The procedure will require local anaesthesia and pain relief medications after treatment to ease any discomfort.
This treatment is for Singaporeans who are worried about their gum colour.
Our aesthetics dentist will assess your gum during the consultation and offer you the right treatment to help you achieve a pink and healthy gum again.
The cost ranges from $250 for a single tooth to $1,500 for a whole arch of teeth. Whitening an arch may range from $900 – $1500 per arch.
How do laser depigmentation procedures help gum bleaching?
Laser depigmentation targets melanin in the gums, removing dark spots and revealing a pinker, even-toned appearance, effectively bleaching hyperpigmented gum tissues.
Can I do gum whitening at home?
There are no home remedies. Gum whitening requires professional equipment and expertise. Attempting at home can lead to injury or ineffective results. Always consult a dentist for such procedures.
How long does the gum whitening laser treatment take?
The procedure generally takes less than an hour depending on the colour and size of the dark patch.

Dentists in Singapore used to fill teeth with mercury fillings. Unfortunately, this means that millennials, Gen-X and senior Singaporeans can still have mercury fillings.
You will notice it. Unlike modern fillings, it has a dark, grey and silvery colour that degrades over time.
What Are The Benefits Of Mercury-Free Restoration?
✓ Aesthetics
✓ Health
✓ Restoration
Mercury-based amalgam fillings are also known to wear away, break or darken over time.
Besides mercury exposure, amalgam can also make your teeth and smile look quite unsightly, which makes mercury-free restoration all the more imperative to preserve the health and pristine look of your teeth.
Do I Have A Mercury Filling?
Look for grey-silvery fillings.
They are not as white as teeth and not as black as tooth decay.
What Are The Health Hazards Of Mercury?
The dangers of mercury poisoning are often heard of through the consumption of fish, although we are subject to harmless traces of mercury in the air around us, vegetables that are grown in untreated soil, and even drinking water.
Singapore and the Minamata Convention on Mercury
Singapore has ratified the Minamata Convention on Mercury, a global treaty to reduce the use of mercury in order to reduce the environmental damage.
One of the Minamata Convention’s provisions is phasing down the use of mercury amalgams.
At Gentle Smile Dental Studio, sustainability is important to us. We always recommend the use of ceramic or composite materials instead.
Concerned?
If you are concerned about your health, you can opt for mercury-free dental restoration.
Upon consultation with our dentist, we will provide our advice as to whether you should undergo mercury replacement dental work.
The dentist will first examine the amalgam filling or crown to assess how deeply it is affixed and the best course of action to safely remove it.
Restore
On the day of the restoration, the dentist will use modern technology and the SMART method to take out the amalgam filling or crown without the risk of exposing you to further mercury emissions.
Safety
Gentle Smile Dental Studio uses the SMART technique. This minimises contact with mercury residue.
Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART)
Dr. Kelvin Chua is SMART certified since 2016. We take these extra precautions based on SMART’s protocol,
Air filtration to ensure no inhalation of mercury vapour
Dental dams to ensure that mercury fillings do not get swallowed or inhaled
Saliva extractor to reduce mercury exposure
The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) first established the SMART protocol in 2016 and recently updated it in 2019.
Timelines and Costs For Dental Mercury Replacement
Mercury replacement dentistry takes one sitting and costs between $200-$500
The restoration process usually takes just one sitting, but also depends on the depth, age, and size of your amalgam filling or crown.
If you need a crown made, a digital model of your teeth will be created which will act as a blueprint for the dental team to construct a customised ceramic crown for your teeth, which can take a few weeks.

Hi, I’m Dr. Kelvin Chua. Let me introduce you to our smile makeovers.
We are constantly appearing publicly in the limelight these days – in Instagram, in photos shared on WhatsApp, and on websites, in addition to classic face-to-face meetings.
People can sense our confidence in a single glance. I know of some people who won’t ever smile and show their teeth.
Many of us aspire to get great teeth and the good news is that Gentle Smile Dental Studio can help you get teeth that are straight, proportional and white.
What Are Smile Makeovers?
Smile makeovers use a layered approach to create your ideal smile.
The main techniques used include multiple veneers and teeth whitening.
This involves looking at shape, colour and alignment.
The aesthetics of a smile are deeply influenced by the harmony and proportion of the teeth, with shape playing a pivotal role in creating that perfect visual appeal.
A beautifully shaped tooth not only complements the facial features but also ensures a balanced and symmetrical appearance, which is often perceived as more attractive.
Dental veneers, thin custom-made shells crafted from porcelain or composite resin, offer an effective solution to enhance or correct the shape of teeth.
By adhering these veneers to the front surface of a tooth, we can artfully redesign the smile, rectifying issues like chipping, unevenness, or undesired gaps.
A harmoniously aligned set of teeth not only contributes to optimal oral function but also plays a pivotal role in aesthetic appeal. Misaligned teeth can detract from the natural beauty of a smile, often leading to decreased self-confidence and reluctance to smile openly.
Proper alignment ensures that each tooth occupies its ideal position, creating a symmetrical and balanced appearance. This symmetry, in turn, enhances the overall facial aesthetics, making the smile a focal point of beauty and expression.
Dental veneers can effectively mask minor misalignments, making teeth appear straighter without orthodontic treatment. They’re custom-made to fit over the front surface of teeth, instantly correcting gaps, overlaps, or slight twists.
The colour of our teeth can significantly influence perceptions of beauty, health, and youth.
If you want perfectly white teeth, ceramic veneers can not only reshape but also brighten teeth to a desired shade, ensuring a consistently white smile.
Step 1: We begin by understanding what you hope to improve about your smiles.
Step 2: We formulate the most balanced smile based on your gum-to-teeth proportions, with a primary focus on how your teeth can be improved.
Step 3: We create a customised plan to ensure that our smile analysis aligns with your expectations.
Step 4: We provide a preview using Digital Smile Design (DSD) software which allows you to get a visual simulation of your final smile before commencing treatment.
Step 5: Trial Smile
At the end of your consultation, we will create your Trial Smile.
A Trial Smile is something you can wear and have a preview of how you will look after your smile makeover with us.
The Trial Smile is a removable, reversible physical mockup which you will place over your teeth.
Components In A Smile Makeover
There are three main components to getting a smile makeover: realign, brighten, reshape.
Realign ✓
This process involves straightening out incongruent or overlapping teeth.
In a Smile Makeover, realignment can be done with an Invisalign treatment, which involves placing a comfortable, see-through plastic aligner that adjusts teeth progressively.
This results in orderly and clean teeth for a graceful smile.
Brighten ✓
Over time the choices of food and drink such as coffee, smoking, and even age can lead to staining or discolouration of teeth.
This can be fixed with a brightening treatment, as it cleanses off the superficial stains to deeper stains.
Over time, your teeth will inevitably get worn down.
Smile Makeover utilises a few techniques to correct misshapen teeth starting with simple bonding which hides the damage caused to the teeth’s shape, colour and size.
Bonding uses composite resin which is known to accurately replicate human teeth.
This enhances your smile with minimal orthodontic inconvenience.
The next option involves choosing between composite or porcelain veneers based on the digital visualisation of your desired smile, which allows you to give your prototype smiles a trial run before finalising your permanent smiles.
Types Of Smile Makeovers
Smile makeovers generally use 8-10 units of veneers, which are meticulously bonded to the front of your teeth, creating harmony and elevating your smile.
Ceramic Veneers
Ceramic dental veneers are thin shells, crafted from porcelain.
You might prefer ceramic veneers because:
They are durable; lasting twice as long as composite veneers
They are translucent, resembling natural tooth enable
Ceramic veneers can handle complex smile makeovers
Age and teeth yellowing have a direct correlation as teeth darken over time due to wear, stain accumulation, and natural changes. A younger person might have fewer stubborn stains and will see the most immediate whitening results.
Nonetheless, we have specialised tools that can elevate the whiteness of your teeth, going beyond what non-prescription whitening strips or toothpastes can achieve
Nobody’s teeth should have metallic colours. That looks out of place in a smile.
Remember those grey-coloured fillings you got in Singapore some years back? Often referred to as “mercury fillings” or “silver fillings”, they might now seem out of place amidst your otherwise white teeth.
Luckily, dentistry has since moved on and you don’t have to live with that blemish. Today, you can easily upgrade to fillings that boast a more natural hue, blending seamlessly with your smile.
We will give your teeth the modern touch they deserve.
If you’re simply dealing with a shade or two of yellow but your teeth are otherwise flawless, a quick visit with us is all you need. Just one session, and you’ll walk out with a brighter smile.
As smile makeovers are a layered service, every person’s costs would vary based on how comprehensive the smile makeover is.
Dental veneers play a central role in a smile makeover. A single dental veneer runs from $700.
Since a smile makeover uses at least six units, therefore a smile makeover involving them would run between $6,000 to $20,000.
On the other hand, if your teeth have great shape and alignment, but have been stained over the years, then you might only need to get a teeth whitening service done. Teeth whitening starts from $350 to $950.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a smile makeover?
Smile makeovers help you achieve your ideal smile using various dental methods.
Types of smile makeovers
Gentle Smile Dental Studio will use various methods to achieve your perfect smile, including Invisalign, teeth whitening, ceramic veneers, implants and removing silver-mercury fillings.
Smile makeover cost in Singapore?
The cost of a smile makeover varies for each individual depending on the extent of the procedures involved. A set of veneers runs between $6,000 to $20,000, aiding in reshaping the smile for those desiring to show more teeth. Conversely, if the teeth are well-shaped and aligned but stained, a teeth whitening service ranging from $350 to $950 may suffice.
How long does a smile makeover take?
Dealing with minor discoloration requires a simple, quick visit for a teeth whitening session to attain a brighter smile. However, more extensive treatments like implants, crowns, or veneers necessitate a longer wait; dental crowns can be a same-day solution, while others might take about two weeks to achieve the desired smile. For individuals requiring a complete realignment, the process is much longer, spanning around 6 months to two years.

The ideal amount of gum that you should show while smiling is about three millimetres.
If you show more than that, your gums can overpower your smile. Scientifically, this is known as “excessive gingival exposure”.
The perfect scenario would be having your lips conceal a large part of your gums, letting your teeth be the focal point of your smile.
Gentle Smile Dental Studio can help you achieve an ideal smile using various methods.
How We Turn Gummy Smiles Into Gentle Smiles
You may have a gummy smile if you have small teeth, overly thick gums, short or hypermobile lips, or a protruding upper jaw bone. There are four main ways that we remedy your gummy smile:
Laser gum contouring
Lip repositioning
BTX
Jaw surgery
Laser Gum Shaping Or Recontouring
This minimally invasive procedure uses a laser to move back your gum line, and is done under local anesthetic.
The amount of tissue removed varies according to the shape of your gum and mouth.
BTX
At our Gentle Smile Dental Studio, we offer a new treatment that involves injecting BTX into those muscles.
The results are impressive as most patients see a significant reduction in their gummy smile.
When injected into the muscles between your upper lip and nose, prevents your lips from elevating when you smile, thus concealing the gum line.
There is little pain and risk, and minimal downtime.
Lip Repositioning Surgery
This procedure fixes a gummy smile if the cause is a hypermobile upper lip, which is a lip that rises too high when you grin, leading to an excessive exposure of the gum. In lip repositioning surgery, doctors remove tissue from the upper lip so that it can rest lower to cover the gum.
Jaw Surgery
If you exhibit a pronounced gummy smile, dentists might propose this surgical solution. They’ll assess the extent of gum exposure, the resting lip position, and potential alternative treatments.
The surgery involves repositioning the upper jaw to minimise gum visibility, creating a balanced appearance between the upper and lower teeth.
Additionally, a correctly aligned jaw ensures an optimal bite, reducing tooth wear over time.
Why Do I Have A Gummy Smile?
For Singaporeans, the main reasons why you have a gummy smile include:
Short Teeth
Adult teeth emerge partially from the gums, with a portion remaining hidden.
If they don’t emerge sufficiently, they appear “under-erupted,” making the smile seem gummy due to the proportion of visible gums.
Over time, factors like stress may lead to nocturnal bruxism, especially in high-stress societies like Singapore.
Nightly teeth grinding gradually shortens the teeth, amplifying the gummy appearance. This change is subtle, often noticeable only over several years.
Jaw-related Gummy Smile
The jaw naturally seeks to avoid gaps between the upper and lower teeth. If teeth erode, both the jawbone and gum adjust downwards to compensate.
In Singapore, diets rich in acidity, with foods and drinks like bubble tea, ice kacang, and pineapple tarts, contribute to tooth erosion.
Teeth grinding also creates minor gaps, prompting jaw adjustments.
Additionally, some may experience excessive upper jaw growth, leading to a more pronounced gummy appearance.
Hypermobile Or Short Upper Lip
The upper lip is crucial in determining the appearance of one’s smile as they hide your gums. If you have a thicker upper, then you will be able to hide more of your gums. On the other hand, if your lips are thinner, then you might expose more gums.
Apart from lip thickness, the degree of lip movement between a resting face and a smile also plays a role. Individuals with highly mobile lips might show more gums, as their lips move significantly when they smile.
